Proven tips for retaining their business

Here comes that season again where our teenage acne clients fall from our schedule like autumn leaves, potentially gouging great holes in our appointment schedule and business bank account. Of course, we want these college-bound kids to earn a top education but, damn, do they all have to take off at the same time? Okay, we’re over it. The question is how to make the most of this annual exodus so we don’t feel as much pain as this can heap on us. Here are a few strategies that worked well for me during my decades of esthetics practice.

  1. Anticipate the situation, don’t just wait for it to happen. You need a plan, and the best planning is that which is thought out and implemented ahead of a problem. Start now!

  2. Those study and party distracted students are likely not to follow their home-care program as well as they could and are just as likely to run out of product and forget to tell mom about it. So, ask mom if she’d like to stock up her son or daughter’s skincare regimen so they don’t wind up on empty and start breaking out again. Double up on everything and offer a small discount for the volume purchase. That should hold them until, say, Thanksgiving when they’ll be returning home for the holiday. We used to ship directly to the dormatories and off-campus apartments so that’s an option as well.

  3. And being home again means a chance to see YOU before heading off to school. Schedule that visit in advance so they don’t have to wait until it’s too late to get in. Yes, you’ll need to remind them but isn’t it worth the extra trouble?

  4. And while they’re with you at Thanksgiving get that Christmas break treatment on the books as well.

Don’t count on clients to lead, it’ll cost you!
