Oh, I would never!

Over the years as an esthetics business mentor and manager of my own companies I have witnessed a long list of one-time promising professionals self-destruct because of unwise public behavior. YOU do not want to be next in line! But long-term success is easy if you follow these simple suggestions:

1. Don't talk s**t about your customers no matter how offended you feel over the actions of some. Complaints reveal more about your attitude than understanding and forgiveness. Keep it positive. Remember, customers are following your social too!

2. Don't shade on your competitors, especially on social! This exposes insecurity and makes enemies you don't need. Stick to your own business and make it hard for anyone to be critical of.

3. Don't put your entire life on display, especially that which does not support your business's quality and purpose. You're giving juice to those who might use it to harm your career. Keep a few secrets.

4. Don't openly ridicule or battle former employers or business collaborators even if you feel a righteous anger inside. You're exposing yourself to potential litigation and, if you do it enough, signal to others that it's YOU who may be the toxic party. Handle your grievances in the shadows.

5. If you want professional respect do not present yourself in a way that would turn you off if it was a doctor doing it. In my 4+ decades of esthetics career professionalism we've been working to win the recognition and trust of the medical community to harmoniously partner with us. We shouldn't dig down attempting to rise up.

I'm speaking at a conference where many dermatological physicians are present. It's my objective to build their confidence in us as legitimate co-professionals, and a safe resource for services they do not or will not offer patients, particularly regarding acne care.

So, how do we want to represent ourselves? When it comes to reputation, avoidance is always easier than correction.

My best to you!
